Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal has become quite popular in the last 5 years. It is an revolutionary technology with many beneficial effects for people with unwanted hair. It would be nice if it was a simple one time treatment that would remove hair forever on any person, on any area of the body, with any skin color, or hair color. Unfortunately, its a bit more complicated than that.

By definition, lasers emit one wavelength of light. Medical science has found some particular wavelengths that are good for the permanent removal of hair. Its safe and effective.

How It Works

Light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. When the light is absorbed, the pigment heats up. Its similar to how a black car will be hotter than a white car in the sun. The heated pigment then heats the hair follicle capillary. This damages the capillary which prevents the follicle from making a hair in the future. Because we use the pigment in the hair, white and blonde hairs are not affected at all. And by the same token, any follicle that does not have a hair in it - like if its been plucked, or is a dormant follicle - will not be affected. Since pigment is important, thicker darker hairs (with more pigment) are usually easier to remove.

Now hair grows in stages and in the active growth stage, the pigment of the hair is in close proximity to the capillary at the base of the hair(in the dermal papilla). As the hair growth cycle progresses it goes into resting stages where it is not actively growing. The laser will remove pigmented hair in all stages. But, it is only effective for permanent results in the active phase. This is because the pigment is not close to the capillary during the resting stages, and it is the reason it takes several treatments to achieve permanent results.

Hair Cycle

Different parts of your body have a different percent of hair in the active and resting stages at any one time. For instance, on your head, it is almost all actively growing. This is why you need to get a haircut. On the rest of your body, there is a much larger amount of hair in the resting stages. The good news is that laser tends to synchronize growth in these areas so that the hairs all grow at the same time.

What that means for you is that, unlike waxing or shaving, the hair will all be gone for about 5 weeks in between treatments! That means NO HAIR for 5 weeks.

What Kind of Results Can You Expect?

I will tell you what I tell everyone! Its easy to remove 50% of pigmented hair permanently. Its IMPOSSIBLE to remove 100% of the hair in an area permanently. Anyone who tells you that is has not been doing laser hair removal long enough.

Now, between 50% and 100% there are a few variables.

#1- Hair Color and Thickness - Thicker and darker hair are easier to remove because they absorb the light better. So darker hair gets closer to the 90-something% range.

#2 - Skin Color - It's difficult for me to get high energies into darker skin because the pigment in the skin will absorb some of the light and, if we use too much energy.

#3 - Area of the body - The area of the body is one of the most important variables. For reasons we do not completely understand, some areas work better than others.

Best Areas- These areas will usually get in the 80-90% range of permanent removal in 6-8 treatments
Bikini (men or women)
Lower legs (men or women)
Neck (men only)
Line on lower abdomen (men or women)
Between eyebrows(men or women)
Ears (men or women)
Nose(men or women)
Fingers(men or women)
Toes(men or women)

Good areas- These areas will get in the 70-90% range after 8-10 treatments
Upper legs(men or women)
Arms(men or women)
Underarms (men or women)
Chest (men only)
Areolas (Women only)
Abdomen (men or women)
Face(men only)

Challenging areas- These areas will get about 50-70% but will probably need long term maintenance
Face (Women only)
Back (Men only)

So the best profile is light skin and thick dark hair in one of the best areas of the body. The worst profile is dark skin and thin hair in a challenging area of the body.

Other Benefits

-No hair in between treatments - up to eight weeks!

-After each treatment less hair comes back and the hair that returns is thinner and straighter.

-Irritation from ingrowns is gone after one treatment because the laser treats the ingrown hair right where it lives under the skin.

-Skin improves since there is no irritating hair, shaving, or waxing for 6 weeks!
