LASER HAIR REMOVAL
BEWARE OF MEDICAL SPAS WITH NO DOCTOR ON SITE

Last month we talked about laser hair removal. I explained how well it works and offered you a great promotion. I regret that I may not have given you the whole story. You see, I explained the process from my point of view as it is performed by me.

At the time, I did not think about all of the other places that are doing laser hair removal without the supervision of a doctor. But a news report I saw last night reminded me of a very important issue.

Unfortunately, not all laser centers and medical spas are made equal. There are many places who rarely have a doctor on site. This doctor is paid a fee to be the "medical director" and s/he shows up now and then, but is not on site during most medical procedures and most patients never see him/her.

This way the medical spa stays in compliance by having a doctor on staff, but costs go way down because the doctor does not have to be there all the time. They can then train "laser technicians" to do the procedures. Most of these so called technicians have no nursing or medical degree. Many are estheticians who might be able to do some things on their own, but should really be directly supervised when using a laser or other medical device.

Fortunately the state of Illinois is making a new rule that will require doctors to be on site. While this may drive up costs a little bit, it is the price we pay for safety. I have seen several people in my office who have had complications from laser hair removal in the wrong hands.

If you know someone who has gone to another place, I urge you to forward this information to your friends so they can learn about the best way to proceed with laser hair removal. I am confident at how well it works in my hands, but I am worried for people who go somewhere else because it costs less and there is no doctor in sight.

I'll be happy to take good care of anyone who comes my way for any of the procedures I do at LightCare Medical Spa.

What should you ask?

1. Make sure there is an on site doctor
2. Make sure you discuss the procedure and its alternatives with that doctor
3. Ask who will be performing your treatment
4. Ask how many of that particular procedure that person has done
5. Ask about complications and how many they have had (complications are always possible, but should be few in number)
6. Trust your gut feeling about the place, the staff and the doctor
7. Be aware of the sales push and do not let anyone pressure you based on timing or a good deal
8. REMEMBER! This is a medical procedure with potential complications and should be performed under the supervision of a medical doctor

Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal has become quite popular in the last 5 years. It is an revolutionary technology with many beneficial effects for people with unwanted hair. It would be nice if it was a simple one time treatment that would remove hair forever on any person, on any area of the body, with any skin color, or hair color. Unfortunately, its a bit more complicated than that.

By definition, lasers emit one wavelength of light. Medical science has found some particular wavelengths that are good for the permanent removal of hair. Its safe and effective.

How It Works

Light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. When the light is absorbed, the pigment heats up. Its similar to how a black car will be hotter than a white car in the sun. The heated pigment then heats the hair follicle capillary. This damages the capillary which prevents the follicle from making a hair in the future. Because we use the pigment in the hair, white and blonde hairs are not affected at all. And by the same token, any follicle that does not have a hair in it - like if its been plucked, or is a dormant follicle - will not be affected. Since pigment is important, thicker darker hairs (with more pigment) are usually easier to remove.

Now hair grows in stages and in the active growth stage, the pigment of the hair is in close proximity to the capillary at the base of the hair(in the dermal papilla). As the hair growth cycle progresses it goes into resting stages where it is not actively growing. The laser will remove pigmented hair in all stages. But, it is only effective for permanent results in the active phase. This is because the pigment is not close to the capillary during the resting stages, and it is the reason it takes several treatments to achieve permanent results.

Hair Cycle

Different parts of your body have a different percent of hair in the active and resting stages at any one time. For instance, on your head, it is almost all actively growing. This is why you need to get a haircut. On the rest of your body, there is a much larger amount of hair in the resting stages. The good news is that laser tends to synchronize growth in these areas so that the hairs all grow at the same time.

What that means for you is that, unlike waxing or shaving, the hair will all be gone for about 5 weeks in between treatments! That means NO HAIR for 5 weeks.

What Kind of Results Can You Expect?

I will tell you what I tell everyone! Its easy to remove 50% of pigmented hair permanently. Its IMPOSSIBLE to remove 100% of the hair in an area permanently. Anyone who tells you that is has not been doing laser hair removal long enough.

Now, between 50% and 100% there are a few variables.

#1- Hair Color and Thickness - Thicker and darker hair are easier to remove because they absorb the light better. So darker hair gets closer to the 90-something% range.

#2 - Skin Color - It's difficult for me to get high energies into darker skin because the pigment in the skin will absorb some of the light and, if we use too much energy.

#3 - Area of the body - The area of the body is one of the most important variables. For reasons we do not completely understand, some areas work better than others.

Best Areas- These areas will usually get in the 80-90% range of permanent removal in 6-8 treatments
Bikini (men or women)
Lower legs (men or women)
Neck (men only)
Line on lower abdomen (men or women)
Between eyebrows(men or women)
Ears (men or women)
Nose(men or women)
Fingers(men or women)
Toes(men or women)

Good areas- These areas will get in the 70-90% range after 8-10 treatments
Upper legs(men or women)
Arms(men or women)
Underarms (men or women)
Chest (men only)
Areolas (Women only)
Abdomen (men or women)
Face(men only)

Challenging areas- These areas will get about 50-70% but will probably need long term maintenance
Face (Women only)
Back (Men only)

So the best profile is light skin and thick dark hair in one of the best areas of the body. The worst profile is dark skin and thin hair in a challenging area of the body.

Other Benefits

-No hair in between treatments - up to eight weeks!

-After each treatment less hair comes back and the hair that returns is thinner and straighter.

-Irritation from ingrowns is gone after one treatment because the laser treats the ingrown hair right where it lives under the skin.

-Skin improves since there is no irritating hair, shaving, or waxing for 6 weeks!

Letter from Dr. Green

Greetings!

What the heck is a detox program? I'm glad you asked. Detoxification is an ongoing process that's happening in your body as we speak. The main detox organ is the liver, but there are many different systems involved. The sweat glands, lymph system, lungs, nose, kidneys, gall bladder, and intestines are all involved in one way or another.

The liver is the most important organ and the most abused. Over the last few decades our environment has become increasingly more toxic. Especially in a big city like Chicago, there are more and more toxic chemicals in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the things we touch and eat. Even without all of these toxins, the liver has the job of clearing many of the natural toxins and breakdown products that are byproducts of our growth and metabolism in even the least toxic environments.

Add up all of the strange chemicals we have discovered and synthesized and you can imagine how hard your liver is working. Think of all the pesticides, sweeteners, medications, alcohol, and hormone-like substances on our food, make-up and cosmetics and you will get a big appreciation for your liver. Put your right hand over your lower right ribs and repeat after me, "Thanks liver!"

It amazes me that the liver has a way of getting rid of strange compounds that were never found in nature before. The problem is that it can't always keep up and toxins can accumulate in your tissues leading to excessive oxidative stress, and possibly DNA damage at the cellular level. And you know what DNA damage leads to...cancer.

Symptoms of toxicity can include headaches, fatigue, insomnia, immune system weakness and chronic GI problems. In order to clear out these accumulated toxins, we can "DUMP the JUNK" with a detox program.

Our detox program supports the cleansing of the liver and bowel with a modified elimination diet which will help remove foods that commonly cause food sensitivities and concentrate on healthy alternatives. The program provides supplements to support the liver and facilitate excretion of toxins, and a supportive group atmosphere with coaching and supervision by a nutritionist and medical doctor (that's ME.)

Sincerely,
Dr. Green

Detox Details
The nutritional coaching, support and information is all FREE. The only cost to you will be the supplements necessary for the detox program. We have two levels of detoxification based on how thorough you want to be with your detox program. The higher level detox will require more supplements which will increase the cost. The "bare bones" detox will use less in the way of supplements and cost less.

The details will be covered on January 14th at the information session. This session is not mandatory, but is important in understanding the specifics of the program including how your body works, the diet modifications, and an outline of exactly what we will be doing.

If you cannot make all the classes, don't worry, you can still sign up and we will support you.

As much as I know about detoxification, I have never done a 3 week program myself. So, I am looking forward to doing this program right by your side!

LightCare Medical Spa is All in the Family

Recently our receptionist, Sarah, took a new position that will allow her more flexibility to take classes as she pursues her career in medicine. We wish her all the best!

In this transition period I have recruited the services of Joyce Harris to manage the front desk responsibilities. Joyce is none other than my own Mom, and I am happy to be working with her and thankful for her help and support.

Joyce has a long history in sales, phone support, office management and customer relations. She will be happy to take care of whatever she can to make your experience with us as positive as it has always been. She will be part time in the office 12-6 on most days.

So when you hear a new voice on the other end of the phone, please be patient as she has jumped in with both feet and is getting familiar with you and the intricacies of my office systems.

Welcome aboard Mom!
